How’s the Atlas so far?

Its not looking for aliens, it’s a radio telescope, called the Very Large Array, they use the dishes to pick up on the radio waves generated by objects that optical telescopes can’t see. It’s used for things like researching black holes, far off galaxies, supernova, and the formation of stars. This image for example was recorded by the Very Large Array

Very comfortable, very smooth. A few minor complaints about some of its intelligent features (like the auto dimming headlights, which will dim when the oncoming car is still miles away), but for the most part it performs well

But if aliens were to signal, they wouldn’t ignore them, right? :)
Man, I am becoming increasingly jealous of this trip.

VLA! I can’t tell exactly which direction you’re heading. What way are you coming through TX? I’d love to see this car if your trip takes you nearby.

ok, surprised then very little security around them (by the look of it)

It’s an extremely remote area, which can pretty much only be reached through hours of driving, but yeah, pretty much the only security is “keep back” signs and some cameras

That I-10 stretch is an... experience to drive. US50 in Nevada is supposed to be the loneliest road in America but I was the most bored on that stretch.

Thanks! Looks like y’all are going across 290 which is a little far north of me. Nice road though and a pretty drive.

I drive that stretch 2-4 times a year. It sucks. So boring it’s hard to stay focused. Best to do at night.

->Brand new VW atlas outta nowhere
-> Always hanging with stef
-> Has time to travel the country and rally despite working for FedEx (I work for FedEx too and have 0% time for anything and $0 for a brand new atlas)
Conclusion: You...you’re the real EIC of Jalopnik. It’s the only explanation. Patrick is just a shadow account. He’s not even real. The Atlas is a review car, isn’t it? Easy to make a long term road trip review look like free time, huh? Stef must be in on this...HOW LONG, STEF?! HOW LONG HAVE YOU, DUSTY AND ‘PATRICK’ BEEN DECEIVING ALL OF US??!

There’s a whole lot of nothing on that stretch until you get to Fredericksburg. If you have a chance now, try to plan your fuel stops for the day. There’s a few spots between Ozona and Sonora where I never have a cell signal. I don’t know how much you want to stop with the trailer, but Fredericksburg is a pretty neat town. Good German food and the National museum of the pacific war is there.

Well... the Atlas is a review car. I’m not always hanging with Stef though

Right. We have now established that you are the chaperone of foolish children.
I look forward to your adventures with Yugo Ballaban in his forthcoming victory tour of Newfoundland.

Did I-10 to CA from Houston 6 times during the 70's. Once solo. I bought 8 new cassettes for the solo drive. Knew them by heart by the time two weeks of soul surfing in SoCal and hiking with friends in AZ were over.

I LOVE Fredericksburg. All of the sausages. Didn’t get to go this time, though.
